The City of Irvine officially joined the global bike‑share movement with the launch of a new fixed‑station Bike Share Pilot Program. The City announced the program with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a community bike ride.
The pilot program, a partnership with Drop Mobility, includes two initial locations — the Irvine Civic Center and University Town Center — featuring 20 pedal‑assist bicycles and two docking stations. All bicycles included in the program are Class 1 pedal‑assist models with a maximum assist speed of 18 miles per hour and a battery range exceeding 30 miles per charge. Users may select from monthly, annual, or Pay‑As‑You‑Go options based on their individual mobility needs.
“Providing access to pedal-assisted bicycles offers exciting benefits for Irvine,” said Mayor Larry Agran. "Not only does the Bike Share Pilot Program support the City’s sustainability efforts, but it also provides residents, students, and visitors with a practical and convenient way to travel throughout the City.”
The City retains ownership of all pilot equipment, while daily operations and maintenance are administered by Drop Mobility. Throughout the pilot, usage data and performance metrics will be continuously evaluated to support responsible program development and to inform a strategic, data‑driven approach to any future expansion of Irvine’s bike share network.
This initiative represents a significant milestone in the evolution of Irvine’s mobility framework. As the City continues to grow, bike share serves as a practical and forward‑looking transportation solution that aligns with Irvine’s long‑term vision for sustainability, connectivity, and enhanced mobility throughout the community.
