JOST Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge Opening
The JOST Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge and trail extension opened Tuesday, August 11, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The community was invited to be among the first to walk or ride across the nearly 1,200-foot-long bridge.

Project Description
The JOST bridge is an extension of the 3.5-mile Jeffrey Open Space Trail. The bridge broke ground in March 2024 and opened to the public in August 2026. The bridge is located south of and adjacent to Jeffrey Road.
The JOST Extension (Barranca to Walnut) project completed an important Class I bicycle and pedestrian facility in the City’s overall trails and open space systems. Together, these projects help close gaps and provide a key linkage between trails that extend from the Pacific Ocean all the way up to the Santa Ana Mountains and Cleveland National Forest.
The bridge is nearly 1,200 feet long and 15 feet wide, making it the largest pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Irvine. It spans the I-5 Freeway, the Jeffrey Road Park & Ride parking lot, and Walnut Avenue, and connects to the Jeffrey Open Space Trail and Cypress Village Trail to the north and the JOST extension to the south.
Architectural features of the bridge were inspired by the existing JOST, elements of the Jeffrey Open Space Spine Community Consensus Plan, and existing land uses in the area. The bridge also includes lighting elements designed to make the JOST Bridge functional and aesthetically pleasing at night as well as during the day.
The bridge includes 2,400 linear feet of steel truss railing, 40 custom-designed decorative steel plate light poles, landscaping, and decorative concrete block walls featuring Italian Villa Stone Veneer.
