Discover the Library of Things

Need something for a one-time project or want to try a new hobby? Borrow before you buy. The Library of Things collection comprises non-traditional items you can check out for free with your Irvine Public Library card. The collection includes musical instruments, tools, gadgets, kits, electronics, and more.

Here are just a few of the items you can check out as part of the Library of Things collection:

  • Items check out for 21 days unless otherwise noted. Items may be renewed up to five times as long as there are no holds.
  • A maximum of three Library of Things items may be checked out per library card at one time.
  • Library of Things items must be returned directly to library staff during open hours.
  • Replacement costs will apply in the case of lost or damaged items.

We are always adding to our Library of Things collection, and we would like to hear from you. Is there an item you would like us to consider purchasing for library circulation? Email us at irvinepubliclibrary@cityofirvine.org (Open in new window) with your suggestion.

We will make every effort to fulfill your request, but purchases are not guaranteed. If we can fulfill your request, the item will be placed on hold for you, and you will be notified when it is ready for pick-up. We will also notify you if we are unable to fulfill your request.

Do you have a “Thing” you’d like to donate? We are seeking new or like-new items suitable for lending through the Library of Things collection. Desired donations include:
  • String instruments
  • Keyboards and small percussion instruments
  • Accessibility items
  • Sewing machines
  • Educational toys
  • Video games and consoles
  • Crafting tools
  • Board games
For safety and maintenance reasons, we are unable to accept items that may be hazardous, contaminated through improper use, or require extensive ongoing maintenance.
