The City of Irvine’s streetscapes are a valuable and sustainable community asset. They strengthen neighborhood character, support community well-being, and enhance quality of life. The trees and plants selected today will help shape Irvine’s environmental health and visual identity for decades to come.

The City adopted its first Master Streetscape Plan in 1998 (Open in new window) to protect the quality of Irvine’s existing streetscapes and ensure that future improvements meet the City’s high standards.

The City is now updating the Master Streetscape Plan to:

  • Add new street segments,
  • Incorporate more sustainable and drought-tolerant trees and plants,
  • Promote responsible water use,
  • Comply with California’s Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO),
  • Include tree species identified in the Urban Forestry Management Plan adopted by the Irvine City Council in 2025, and
  • Provide greater flexibility for the City’s Arborist to revise approved tree species as conditions and best practices evolve.

These updates will help Irvine maintain attractive, resilient, and water-efficient landscaped environments throughout the community.

Community members are invited to review and comment on the draft Master Streetscape Plan (Open in new window) prior to the scheduled Planning Commission meeting.

Please submit comments by email to CD@cityofirvine.org (Open in new window) or written comments to Community Development Department, c/o Master Streetscape Plan Update, P.O. Box 19575, Irvine, CA 92623.

The draft Master Streetscape Plan is scheduled for consideration by the Planning Commission on November 5, 2026.
